How does it work?

The Bluetooth module, which allows electronic devices to communicate with each other, is a small component which acts as both a transmitter and a receiver of radio waves. Pairing it with a second module ensures two-way connectivity, i.e. the ability to transfer data (e.g. files) from one device to another over short distances. The range of a Bluetooth connection is usually between a few and 10 metres, which depends mainly on the physical obstacles that may be in its path (such as a thick wall of a wall).

So how is it possible that the Apple AirTag we sent in a package to another country is communicating with our smartphone?

AirTags use a global network formed by all active Apple devices. They send out an encrypted Bluetooth signal that is detected by nearby Apple devices. These, share the locator's location data to iCloud. By activating the appropriate app on an iPhone or computer paired with the AirTag, you can see its location on a map.

Bluetooth technology is named after Harald Bluetooth...

...living in the 10th century, the first Danish king. This king, referred to in his country as Harald Blåtand, gained his nickname because of a tooth which, partially knocked out in a skirmish or accident, became necrotic. Harald subjugated Norway and southern Sweden and thus helped to unite the rival chieftains, known as jarls.

The author of the Bluetooth concept, Swede Jim Kardach, fascinated by Bluetooth, decided to name a technology that "unites" devices of various types in his honour. Hence, in the Bluetooth logo, we can see two runes derived from the Fuþark junior alphabet - haglaz and berkanan, corresponding to the initials of the Viking king.

Harald was thus permanently commemorated, and his nickname and initials accompany all users of electronic devices, every day.
